We all know the human body is an incredible thing but sometimes it's a little hard to understand. But you may be asking what does it take to have a healthy prolonged erection? I hope after reading this you'll know exactly what has to happen in the body to produce a harder penis erection.

The first thing to trigger a penis erection is sexually arousal. The stimulation can be something that is sexually appealing to you, such as being close to your partner, even visual images or smells, feelings, tastes or even sounds.

When you becomes sexually aroused, a gas called nitric oxide causes the the nerves and cells in the penis to relax and stretch so that it can fill with blood. Then the NANC neurons (nerve terminals) can begin their dance.

Immediately after arousal, nitric oxide must be plentiful for an penis erection to be successful. At this moment the gases are released by the endothelium - the thin lining of the arteries - into the the main cavity of the penis.

(Keep in mind those with male erectile dysfunction can't produce enough nitric oxide which is the first hurdle - more about this later on)

The introduction of nitric oxide (NO) to the penis causes a chain of natural molecular events begins to occur. The nitric oxide activates an enzyme called guanylate cyclase.

Then this enzyme guanylate cyclase converts guanosine triphosphate (GTP) ... a type of protein ... into cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP).

Now cGMP is really important because it allows those smooth muscles to relax, which in turn causes an inflow of blood which then leads to a penis erection.

Not to forget that cGMP activates a protein called kinase G (PKG), which phosphorylates proteins at the so-called maxi-potassium channels. (the final ingredient)

And Ta dah! Just what we were after an healthy penis erection! But now we have to keep it there.

Now that we have a penis erection due to increased levels of cGMP and the resulting smooth muscle tissue relaxation its all normal, so long as were having sex and producing nitric oxide ... but beware ... we don't want this to still be happening as we stroll down the grocery isle with a cart full of pampers.

In order to eventually calm things down, cGMP must be destroyed and returned back to its original concentration in the penis cavity. A little enzyme called phosphodiesterase 5 or PDE5 does this for us. It basically binds and digests cGMP.

Now for males that don't have erectile dysfunction, cGMP begins to be digested by the PDE5 as soon as it is produced. However, when you are sexually excited, the nitric oxide is continually activating the enzyme guanylate cyclase which continues to produce cGMP so the PDE5 can't really keep up with the cGMP production (which is a good thing) or begin effectively reducing cGMP levels until after the nitric oxide is absent (when you are no longer sexually stimulated).

Now for males with erectile dysfunction not enough nitric oxide is being produced from the very get go - the nitric oxide stage. This means that the small amount of cGMP available is consumed by PDE5, and since there wasn't much nitric oxide there to begin with the game of catch up is soon over with. PDE5 consumes it all! As soon as cGMP becomes available you erection becomes weaker until nothing is left.
